UKHTA
1. Ukhta is a young growing town, a centre of a vast oil-rich area. We know that the first reference to the Ukhta oils was made in the 16th century. Russian industrialists began to extract oil in that place in the 18th century. But a profound geological research started only in 1920 and as a result in 1930 the geologists laid the foundation of a settlement on the banks of the Ukhta river. Later in 1943 the settlement with a population of 3 thousand people became a town. 2. In the wartime the demand for new energy sources grew. The Ukhta oil workers did their best to supply the industrial centres of Russia and the Soviet Army with oil and oil products of the best quality. 3. The post-war development was rapid. It was based on oil and gas extraction, production of soot and chemical products from oil. Oil refineries and other processing and manufacturing industries have turned Ukhta into an important industrial centre of northern Russia. 4. There also developed the building materials’ industry in Ukhta. The construction of the Brickyard and the Civil engineering complex helped to supply the cities and towns of the Komi Republic with bricks, cement, gravel and other building materials. In Ukhta there is also a plant producing ceramic goods both for household and industrial use. 5. Cosy dwelling districts, attractive offices in the centre of the town, parks and squares produce a deep impression on newcomers. The young people of Ukhta are proud of their Industrial University. It was set up in 1967 but today it is a major educational and research centre, providing different branches of our economy with highly qualified specialists. More than 15 thousand young engineers in oil, gas, electric, building and forestry industries have graduated from the University already.
