On pleasant afternoons in countries as different as England, Australia, India, and Jamaica, children and adults grab their bats and balls, and run out to the fields to play. But these aren’t baseballs or baseball bats, and it isn’t a baseball field, for many people in these countries play cricket.

Cricket is similar to baseball in many ways. In both sports, the object of the game is to score more runs than the other team. In each game, one team fields while the other team bats.

But unlike baseball, in cricket the team has eleven players. Instead of having a pitcher, a cricket team has a bowler. The bowler pitches the ball to one batter, but there are actually two batters on the field at one time. Though there are only two innings in a cricket game, some games have lasted for more than two days!

Cricket started in England many centuries ago. Shepherds in the south of England used their staffs as bats.Eventually, rules were made and the game gained popularity. When the British Empire started to grow, the English people went to India, Australia, North America, and many countries in the West Indies, bringing their customs with them. When these countries became independent and the British left, many of their traditions, including cricket, stayed behind.

Cricket was once popular in the United States and Canada in the 1800s. But during the American Civil War, baseball gained popularity in the United States because it was easier to find a place to play baseball than a place to play cricket, which needs more room. So soldiers brought baseball back from the war.

Many countries have professional cricket teams. Popular cricket players are national heroes, and a few have even been knighted by the Queen of England! Cricket lovers from Jamaica to New Zealand and from India to England have made their game one of the world’s most popular sports.
