United Kingdom. Students who live in England, Wales and Northern Ireland must take the examinations receive the Scottish Certificate of Education. Affer taking these exams students can choose to stay on at school or enter some college of further education. There is no national system of higher education in the UK. Every university is autonomous, self-governing and responsible only to its governing body. They are guaranteed academic independence. The rules of teaching differ from university to university. Funding for education and scientific research is provided by funding councils set up by Parlament. The universities can be divided into three types: the old Universities (Oxford, Cambridge and Edinburg Universities), the 19 th century univesities such as London and Manchester Universities, and the new universities. The number of universities jumped in 1992 when politechnics and some other higner educational establishments were given the rignt to become universities. By the end of 1994 there were some 90 universities almost half of them former politechnics including the Open Universities. The two oldest universities of Great Britain are Oxford and Cambridge. Many of the colleges of Oxford and Caimbridge were founded in the 12 th and 13 th centuries. All other universities in Britain wewre founded in 19 th and 20 th century when technicians, scientists and economists were needed with the rapid development of industry. The older universities didn t produce them therefore technical colleges and modern universities were set up in industrial centres, e.g. in London, Manchester, Leeds, Sheffield, ect. The open University, based in Milton Keynes, England, was founded in 1969. It uses extension techniqiues of correspondence courses, television and radio programmes, and videocassettes, supported by local study centres and residential summer schools to provide hieducation opportunities to a wide variety of people. The teaching at the universities is based on the tutorial system as well as lectures. Every student has a tutor who decides what lectures the student must attend, recommends books for reading, discusses and criticizes their written works and knows all about his discipline inside and outside the college. All lectures and examination are organized by The University authorities. The college provides for residence and tutoring. The academic year in Britain is divided into three terms which usually run from October to December, from January to March and from April to June. Examinations are held at the end of the course of the studies. About 90 per cent of students got state grants to cover tuition fees and living costs. This grant depends on the income of their parents. Parents with higner incomes are expected to make a contribution. Since 1990, however, grants have been frozen; students can apply for a student loan which has to be paid back. As the higner education in Great Britain is not free of charge, most students have to work during their vacations and in the evenings.

We spend about one-third of our lives sleeping, and when not dreaming, we аге completely without consciousness. Even the humble fruit fly sleeps while some creatures, such as dolphins, sleep with half their brain at а time. Sleep matters: go one night without it and we suffer the next day; go too long and we would die. As we fall asleep, the rapid electrical activity found in normal waking fades away and slow, deep waves start coursing throughout the cortex. Most sensory input is blocked and nerve signals to muscles are interrupted, preventing us from acting out our dreams. Despite this, the brain remains almost as active as when we are awake. Sleep is usually divided into three stages of increasing depth, plus the «rapid eye movement» (REM) stage in which brain activity is similar to waking and most dreams occur. There are many theories about why we sleep. Some researchers think sleep helps consolidate memories from the previous day.Others believe it rebalances neurotransmitter levels. Dreams are even more mysterious. Freud believed that they represent wish fulfillment of the subconscious. А more recent theory argues that they are just the brain making sense of its own activity when cut off from the world.Dream consciousness is different from normal consciousness. When dreaming, we easily accept bizarre events, show reduced self-awareness, and generally lack experiences of volition. This may have to do with lower activity in the prefrontal cortex during dreaming. And dreaming is not limited to REM sleep – dream reports are also common after waking from early «slow wave» sleep, though these dreams are relatively static, snapshot-like images and usually lack а «self» character.

How does the dreaming state differ from the normal consciousness, according to the text?
1) Critical perception of uncommon situations is reduced.2) Concept of personality becomes diluted.3) A dreamer lacks the free will.4) Control of peristaltic activity is lost.5) Dreams that occur in the “slow wave” stage are static.6) Dreamer experiences connection to dolphins and fruit flies.

object or record that is generally accepted as payment for goods and services and repayment of debts in a given country or socio-economic context. The exchange of goods and services in markets is among the most universal activities of human life. To facilitate these exchanges, people settle on something that will serve as a medium of exchange—they select something to be money. However, this has not always been true. In primitive societies a system of barter was used. Barter was a system of direct exchange of goods. Somebody could exchange a sheep, for example, for anything in the market place that they considered to be of equal value. Barter, however, was a very unsatisfactory system because people’s precise needs seldom coincided. People needed a more practical system of exchange, and various money systems developed based on goods which the members of a society recognized as having value. Cattle, grain, teeth, shells, feather, salt, tobacco have been used.Precious metals gradually took over because, when made into coins, they were portable, durable, recognizable and divisible into larger and smaller units of value. The main functions of money are distinguished as: a medium of exchange; a unit of account; a store of value; and, occasionally in the past, a standard of deferred payment. When money is used to intermediate the exchange of goods and services, it is performing a function as a medium of exchange. It thereby avoids the inefficiencies of a barter system, such as the ‘double coincidence of wants’ problem. Money also serves as a unit of account. A unit of account is a standard numerical unit of measurement of the market value of goods, services, and other transactions. Also known as a “measure” or “standard” of relative worth and deferred payment, a unit of account is a necessary prerequisite for the formulation of commercial agreements that involve debt. The third function of money is to serve as a store of value, that is, an item that holds value over time. To act as a store of value, money must be able to be reliably saved, stored, and retrieved – and be predictably usable as a medium of exchange when it is retrieved. The value of the money must also remain stable over time. Money, of course, is not the only thing that stores value. Houses, office buildings, land, works of art, and many other commodities are regarded as a means of storing wealth and value. Money differs from these other stores of value as it is readily exchangeable for other commodities. Its role as a medium of exchange makes it a convenient store of value. Because money acts as a store of value, it can be used as a standard for future payments. When you borrow money, for example, you typically sign a contract pledging to make a series of future payments to settle the debt. These payments will be made using money, because money acts as a store of value. The money supply of a country consists of currency (banknotes and coins) and usually includes bank money (the balance held in checking accounts and savings accounts). Bank money, which consists only of records (mostly computerized in modern banking), forms by far the largest part of broad money in developed countries. 2. Определите, к каким частям речи относятся данные слова. Распределите их в таблице. Перевидите на русский, только не через переводчик!!! One day an English schoolboy was taken to the headmaster by his teacher because he did not do his lessons. “My boy,” the headmaster said, ”I am afraid you do not like to work. I suppose you are happier not working. Now I want you to be happy”. He took the boy tothe next room. There he told him to sit on a chair, saying, “I must write something, and have no time to talk with you. But you can watch me at work, which won’t be difficult for you. And I hope you will be very happy for a few hours having nothing to do.” The boy was very glad, and he enjoyed an hour doing nothing. But soon things began to look less pleasant. The boy looked round the room, and at last decided to take a book that was lying on the table near him, but the headmaster stopped him. “ You wanted to do nothing. So you see, you must not read.” The boy tried to speak to the headmaster; but he got no answer. They sat for three hours. Then the headmaster finished his work and prepared to go out. “Come,” he said, “ let us down into the playground.” The boy who was by this time very tired of doing nothing, gladly agreed. When he saw his school friends he decided to join them but the head master stopped him saying, “Playing is doing something, and you must do nothing; so you cannot join your school friends in their games.” This was too much for the boy, and he burst into tears.
