Maps were made long before reading and writing were invented. The earliest map that we know of is a cave painting in the Lascaux caves in France. The painting shows a part of the summer night`s sky 16,500 years ago. Modern astronomers can still understand the night sky shown in the map. A four thousand year old map by theBabylonians is still in existence. Many ancient map-makers thought that the world was flat, but explorers like Magellan in the 15th century sailed around the world and helped to make better maps. Besides, measurements taken by satellites show that our planet is slightly pear-shaped. Satellites have also provided more accurate information and have helped to see and map parts of the world that were little know or never seen by humans before. Satellites have photographed the Amazon rainforest and have shown that the area the size of twenty football pitches is being cut down every minute. Pictures taken from space have also show that one of the world`s largest areas of inland water, the Aral Sea, has been shrinking  very quickly.Modern satellite maps show the effects ot global warming and polllution and help us to understand the world around us better. More and more drivers nowadays rely on satellite navigation in their cars so the traditional road maps may not  be around much longer.

The students of mathematics may wonder where the word «mathematics „comes from. Mathematics is a Greek word, and, by origin or etymologically, it means “something that must be learnt or understood», perhaps “acquired knowledge" or «knowledge acquirable by learning» or “general knowledge". The word «mathematics'' is a contraction of all these phrases. The celebrated Pythagorean school in ancient Greece had both regular and incidental members. The incidental members were called „auditors“; the regular members were named „mathematicians“ as a general class and not because they specialized in mathematics; for them mathematics was a mental discipline of science learning. What is mathematics in the modern sense of the term, its implications and connotations? There is no neat, simple, general and unique answer to this question. Mathematics as a science, viewed as a whole, is a collection of branches. The largest branch is that which builds on the ordinary whole numbers, fractions, and irrational numbers, or what collectively, is called the real number system.Arithmetic, algebra, the study of functions, the calculus, differential equations, and various other subjects which follow the calculus in logical order, are all developments of the real number system. This part of mathematics is termed the mathematics of number. A second branch is geometry consisting of several geometries. Mathematics contains many more divisions. Each branch has the same logical structure: it begins with certain concepts, such as the whole numbers or integers in the mathematics of number, and such as point, line and triangle in geometry. These concepts must verify explicitly stated axioms. Some of the axioms of the mathematics of number are the associative, commutative, and distributive properties and the axioms about equalities. Some of the axioms of geometry are that two points determine a line, all right angles are equal, etc. From the concepts and axioms theorems are deduced. Hence, from the standpoint of structure, the concepts, axioms and theorems are the essential components of any compartment of mathematics. We must break down mathematics into separately taught subjects, but this compartmentalization taken as a necessity, must be compensated for as much as possible. Students must see the interrelationships of the various areas and the importance of mathematics for other domains. Knowledge is not additive but an organic whole and mathematics is an inseparable part of that whole. The full significance of mathematics can be seen and taught only in terms of its intimate relationships to other fields of knowledge. If mathematics is isolated-from other provinces, it loses importance. The basic concepts of the main branches of mathematics are abstractions from experience, implied by their obvious physical counterparts. But it is noteworthy, that many more concepts are introduced which are, in essence, creations of the human mind with or without any help of experience. Irrational numbers, negative numbers and so forth are not wholly abstracted from the physical practice, for the man's mind must create the notion of entirely new types of numbers to which operations such as addition, multiplication, and the like can be applied. The notion of a variable that represents the quantitative values of some changing physical phenomena, such as temperature and time, is also at least one mental step beyond the mere observation of change. The concept of a function, relationship between variables, is almost totally a mental creation. The more we study mathematics the more we see that the ideas and conceptions involved become more divorced and remote from experience, and the role played by the mind of the mathematician becomes larger and larger. The gradual introduction of new concepts which more and more depart from forms of experience finds its parallel in geometry and many of the specific geometrical terms are mental creations. As mathematicians nowadays working in any given branch discover new concepts which are less and less drawn from experience and more and more from human mind the development of concepts is progressive and later concepts are built on earlier notions. These facts have unpleasant consequences. Because the more advanced ideas are purely mental creations rather than abstractions from physical experience and because they are defined in terms, of prior concepts it is more difficult to understand them and illustrate their meanings even for a specialist in some other province of mathematics. Nevertheless, the current introduction of new concepts in any field enables mathematics to grow rapidly. Indeed, the growth of modern mathematics is, in part, due to the introduction of new concepts and new systems of axioms.

Why throw away so much?

Many countries bury and forget about millions of tons of rubbish every year. It is known that in one year, a European family with two children throws away about 50 kilos of paper ( that`s six tress), and about 60 kilos of plastic.

The Green Word reports say that in one year the average person throws away:about70food cans, 34 cans of pet food and about 70 drink cans.

But we don`t have to throw away all our waste paper, glass, metal and plastic. We can also burn or recycle a lot of it. In fact waste can be wonderfull stuff.

Many things that we throw away can still be useful. In fact it`s possible to recycle 80% of domestic rubbish. We can rececle most kinds of paper, glass, metal and plastic. But only 4% of recyclable material is actually recycled. Recycling is expensive. But it saves trees and energy and protects the environment from pollution.

The internal combustion engine is a machine that develops power from the combustion of fuel within a cylinder. The cycle of operation is as follows:

a) Suction Stroke- Just before the piston reaches the inner dead-centre, a valve, usually of the «poppet» type, is opened.

On its outward stroke, the piston draws into the cylinder an explosive mixture of air and fuel vapour.

Shortly before the piston reaches the outer dead-centre, the inlet valve is closed and the compression stroke begins.

  1. Compression stroke- During this stroke, the whole of the gas in the cylinder is compressed into the free space at the head of the cylinder.
  2. Explosion, or Working Stroke- When the compression stroke is almost complete, the explosive mixture is ignited by an electric spark or by other suitable means. The gases reach their maximum pressure almost immediately, and work is done until the piston has again reached a position just before the outer dead- centre, when a second exhaust valve is opened.
  3. If the ignition takes place too late, the piston begins its outward journey before the maximum pressure is developed and power is lost.

If, on the other hand, the explosive mixture is ignited too early, the maximum pressure is reached before the piston has completed its inward journey, and engine is slowed down or even stopped.

d) Exhaust Stroke- The burnt gases are driven out in front of the and its return until the inlet valve again opens, when the cycle is repeated.

Read the story and answer the question

The Bird Room

1. When I was young, I had two parakeets. One was very impressive. She could lift open the door of her cage with one foot and slip through the door. She would fly around and perch on a windowsill for a while. Eventually, she let herself back into her cage. I had a second parakeet who was not as smart. He would wait beside the door and slip out along with her. However, he never knew when she would return. He would get stuck outside the cage and be waiting on a windowsill, hungry, when I arrived home from school.

2. Because of my smart parakeet's example, I imagined having a bird room some day. While I was in college, I continued keeping birds, though in a cage with the door left open. I thought that having several birds allowed me to spend time away from the house while knowing that my pets were not lonely. At last, in my thirties, I created my bird room.

3. By this time, I had regained an interest in music. I had played saxophone in high school, but did not continue in college. I had always wanted to be able to sing, so I took singing lessons. Having a bird room helped very much because I could tell myself that I was both practicing and spending time with my pets. Also, it was fun to see how the birds reacted. I had canaries and zebra finches. The male canaries sometimes sang with me, and all the canaries tilted their heads as if interested. The finches liked to sit together in couples like movie-goers.

4. For anyone who loves birds, a bird room is a feasible way to keep pets. If you put tapestries or sheets on the floor, you can wash them once a week which is the bulk of the cleaning. Birds are gregarious, and a room allows them to have ample companionship. You can attach hanging perches to the ceiling and watch them fly from one to another. You can put nests in places and put twine or string on the floor so that they can builddwellings. My room has a ceiling fan. It's funny to watch them land on one blade and have it slowly turn like a merry-go-round.

On pleasant afternoons in countries as different as England, Australia, India, and Jamaica, children and adults grab their bats and balls, and run out to the fields to play. But these aren’t baseballs or baseball bats, and it isn’t a baseball field, for many people in these countries play cricket.

Cricket is similar to baseball in many ways. In both sports, the object of the game is to score more runs than the other team. In each game, one team fields while the other team bats.

But unlike baseball, in cricket the team has eleven players. Instead of having a pitcher, a cricket team has a bowler. The bowler pitches the ball to one batter, but there are actually two batters on the field at one time. Though there are only two innings in a cricket game, some games have lasted for more than two days!

Cricket started in England many centuries ago. Shepherds in the south of England used their staffs as bats.Eventually, rules were made and the game gained popularity. When the British Empire started to grow, the English people went to India, Australia, North America, and many countries in the West Indies, bringing their customs with them. When these countries became independent and the British left, many of their traditions, including cricket, stayed behind.

Cricket was once popular in the United States and Canada in the 1800s. But during the American Civil War, baseball gained popularity in the United States because it was easier to find a place to play baseball than a place to play cricket, which needs more room. So soldiers brought baseball back from the war.

Many countries have professional cricket teams. Popular cricket players are national heroes, and a few have even been knighted by the Queen of England! Cricket lovers from Jamaica to New Zealand and from India to England have made their game one of the world’s most popular sports.

Dear Nastia,

Thank you for your letter. I am glad to hear you again. The weather in May in the place I live is very nice and sunny. Mostly the temperatures are high enough to wear t-shirts and shorts. However, I would recommend you to bring some warm clothes too, because sometimes it can be cold and rainy. As for me, I actually like summer. I think it is the best season, because it is always sunny, hot and bright. I can eat ice-creams and drink cold sodas all day along. Also, I love swimming a lot, and during the summer I can spend hours swimming in lakes and rivers. Finally, I am always in a good mood when it is sunny outside.

Anyhow, hope to see you soon and have a safe trip.

An organization’s capacity to identify, attract and retain high-quality, high -performing people who can develop winning strategies has become decisive in ensuring competitive advantage. High performers are easier to define than to find. They are people with limitless energy and enthusiasm. They are full of ideas and get things done quickly and effectively. They inspire others not just by pep talks but alsothrough the sheer force of their example. Such people can push their organizations to greater and greater heights. However, not all high performers are stolen, some are lost. High performers generally leave because organizations do not know how to keep them.Money remains an important motivator but organizations should not imagine that it is the only one that matters.  In practice, high performers to take for granted that they will get a good financial package. They seek motivation from other sources.

I usually wake up at seven and always get up at once. I begin my day with my morning exercises. It takes me half an hour to do them. Then I take a shower and shave, dress and do my hair. After that I have breakfast. Then I take my dog out for a short time. I leave the house at nine o'clock and walk to the underground station. It takes me twenty minutes to get to the office by underground. Work begins at half past nine. I look through the morning mail and answer the letters and faxes. Then I discuss various problems with my collegues.

Our lunch break's at one, and we all go to the canteen. I have a light lunch, so it dosen't take long, and I usually have enough time to have a smoke and talk to my friends before work begins again. A lot of people ring me in the afternoon, and my secretary often asks me to answer the calls. That keeps me busy till half past four, when I have a tea break. After that I usually hold a short meeting with my collegues, and we discuss our plans for the next day. I finish work at six, and sometimes a friend drives me to the park, where we have a game of tennis. I'm quite good at tennis, so I teach him to play. What happened?
What has happened? (What's happened?)
What has been happened?
